About Our School

History

Port Shepstone School opened in 1901 on grounds that extended over two blocks in the centre of Port Shepstone.  A steady growth necessitated extensions to the original building until 1952, when the high school was established. 211 pupils moved across, leaving 379 at the original primary school.  When the Junior School (now Port Shepstone Senior Primary) was built in 1960, the original school became known as Port Shepstone Infant School.  Gradually, Port Shepstone Infant School became Port Shepstone Junior Primary School, a thriving establishment serving the community.

The School Badge

The first badge was adopted in 1943. The badge is still used by Port Shepstone Junior Primary, Port Shepstone Senior Primary and Port Shepstone High School. The badge is based on the Cross of St Anne- as the first school in Port Shepstone was at a church called St Anne’s. The book of learning occupies the upper quarter . The two stars represent “ Stella Aurora”- the star of the morning and beginning of a new day. The sailing ship represents that Port Shepstone was a port in the pioneering days. The badge was designed by a learner named Sybil Mann.

Message from the Principal

Welcome to Port Shepstone Junior Primary School. Thank you for visiting our website and for taking the time to learn more about our school — a place where education goes beyond the classroom and every child is valued, supported, and inspired to succeed.

Our Motto for 2026 as we embrace 125 in Education is,

“We are more than just a school — we are a family, a foundation and a future.”

A family because we nurture meaningful relationships built on respect, kindness, and belonging. Every learner, parent, educator, and staff member plays an important role in creating a caring environment where children feel safe, encouraged, and confident to grow.

A foundation because the 3-4 years spent with us from Grade R through to Grade Three, shape the character, values, and skills that learners carry with them throughout their lives. PSJPS strive to provide a strong academic grounding while also developing integrity, resilience, leadership, and compassion. We believe that education is not only about achieving results but about building responsible and capable young people who will positively impact the world around them.

Most importantly, we are a future. Every learner who walks through our gates carries dreams, potential and purpose. Our commitment is to equip each child with the knowledge, confidence and opportunities needed to embrace the future with courage and determination. Through quality education, dedicated educators, and a supportive community, we prepare our learners to become tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

As Principal, I am proud of the spirit of unity, excellence and care that defines our school. Together with our committed staff and supportive parents, we continue to create an environment where learners are encouraged to discover their strengths, pursue their passions, and believe in themselves.

We invite you to become part of our journey and support us in our aim to make our school safer. Your contributions will enable us to continue building not only successful learners, but strong families, lasting foundations, and brighter futures.

Kerry Peyper

Message from the SGB Chairperson

As the Chairperson of the School Governing Body, it is my privilege to welcome you to our vibrant school community. PSJPS is more than just a place of learning, it is a home filled with memories, growth, and opportunities.

The School Governing Body is committed to working closely with the Principal, educators, parents, and the wider community to ensure that our learners receive quality education in a safe, caring, and supportive environment. We believe that strong partnerships between home and school play are vital to the success and development of every child.

Together, we strive to create opportunities that will prepare our learners to become responsible, confident, and compassionate citizens of the future.

We encourage parents and community members to become actively involved in the life of the school and to support our ongoing efforts to provide the very best for our learners. We appeal to all parents, past learners, corporates and members of our community to support our fundraising initiative and to donate towards building a secure perimeter wall to ensure the safety and protection of our young learners and staff.

Thank you for visiting our website and for being part of our journey.Let us build not only a wall, but a lasting legacy of care, pride, and commitment to our school.

Our Story - The Wall

Do you remember your school days?

Do you remember the laughter on the playground, the friendships, the sense of belonging?

For 125 years, Port Shepstone Junior Primary School has been a place of learning, growth, and community.

But today, our learners face a challenge — a lack of proper perimeter security.

Without a secure boundary wall, our children are vulnerable. We are committed to changing this — but we cannot do it alone.

We are calling on past learners, past educators, parents, and our community to help us build a safer environment.

Help Us Build a Safe Future For Our Learners
One Brick Can Make the Difference

Port Shepstone Junior Primary School is a state-subsidised school operating at Quintile Level 5, which means that the funding we receive from the Department of Education is limited.

As a result, we rely heavily on school fees to sustain the daily operations of the school and to meet our financial obligations. This funding enables us to maintain smaller learner-to-educator ratios, provide quality resources, and offer a well-rounded extracurricular programme.

The Department of Education is involved in this project in a supervisory capacity; however, due to budgetary constraints, it is unable to provide financial support. Current funding priorities are directed towards infrastructure development in Quintile Levels 1 to 3. Consequently, the construction of our perimeter wall will need to be funded through fundraising initiatives led by the School Governing Body.

Our Goal

Target Amount: R5 million Rand

We are building a secure perimeter wall with Controlled Access Gates

This will increase Learner Safety

                         Timeline

We aim to begin construction in June 2026 and continue as funds are secured. As the current fence will be dropped and

security expenses incurred to avid access to the premises, we are hoping to reach target  and complete the project in 2026.
